THE HISTORY OF ED STEARNS DRESSED MEATS, INC.
Ed Stearns Dressed Meats was established in 1932 by Ed Stearns sr. and his wife Margerite. Their children : Ed jr,Phyllis,Don,Betty and Kathy all helped with the family business. As time went by all the children went on to different jobs except Don. in the 1960’s Ed sr. had a lung operation. Don and his family ran the business while Ed was sick. Margerite passed away in 1973 and Ed sr. passed away in 1974. In 1975 Ed jr and his wife Irene moved back to Charlton to reopen the business. Their children: Ed 3rd,Rick,Jim and Tammy helped run the family business. They also called on a lot of friends and other family to help. Ed and Jim decided to go onto other jobs. Rick and Tammy stayed at the family business. At this time the business was only a custom slaughterhouse. In the blizzard of 1978 when the farmers were unable to bring in any animals, Ed and Irene decided to open a retail store two days a week. Ed Stearns jr. passed away in 1998. Rick and Tammy took over the business. Seeing that the retail store was growing each week they decided to expand. They moved the store to a bigger part of the plant and expanded the hours to 4 days a week. Maybe it will grow even more? We have been very lucky with the employees that are working here. Bob Kidd has been working here for 23 years full time,Steve MCcloud 24 years, both part and full time,Laurie Meehan 7 years,Bob ³WILLIE² Wiles 6 years and Gene Smith 3 years. Without employees like that we could have never done what we have. We would like to take this time to thank everyone for all the support and help through the years.
